Wrongful Termination/ Discrimination

If your termination of employment was illegal or came under unfair circumstances in which you were harassed, discriminated and/or retaliated against, then your situation may be a wrongful termination. The first question to ask yourself is whether the firing was legal or illegal. Washington state follows the doctrine of “at-will employment,” which means that either party to an employment relationship may terminate the relationship at any time and/or for any reason. Although this law tends to relieve employers from any liability for wrongful discharge, they may also be subject to employer liability for terminating an employee under certain statutory and common law reasons. Wrongful termination claims are often difficult to prove, since Washington is an at-will employment state, and there is only a limited amount of time in which these claims can be filed. Speaking to an attorney about your wrongful termination early will most likely improve the outcome of the situation.
